Ruth Ozeki Lounsbury is an award-winning novelist and filmmaker, whose work has garnered international critical acclaim for its ability to integrate issues of science, technology, environment, politics and global popular culture into unique hybrid narrative forms. She has lectured at universities and colleges around the world and worked in commercial television and media production for over a decade.

The story of a Japanese-American prodigal daughter who returns to her family’s potato farm to confront her own past and the future of farming in America. The story of a Japanese-American documentary filmmaker and a Japanese housewife, whose lives are connected by a TV cooking show. Halving the Bones - Producer/Director/Writer

An independent feature length documentary that tells the story of the half-Japanese filmmaker who inherits a can of her deceased grandmother’s bones. Awards: International Documentary Association’s Distinguished Achievement Award; Kodak Award for Creative Use of Cinematography; San Francisco International Film Festival Certificate of Merit.  Selected Screenings: Sundance Film Festival Documentary Competition,  Montreal World Film Festival, Margaret Mead Festival, San Francisco Asian American Film Festival

Body of Correspondence - Producer/Director/Writer

A one hour independent television drama that tells the story of an obsessed archivist and the two women whose letters he curates. Awards: San Francisco Film & Video Festival, New Visions. A presentation of the Independent Television Service and Corporation for Public Broadcasting, for PBS.

Native American Jewelry - Director/Writer

A thirty minute high definition television documentary about Navaho and Pueblo jewelry. Written and directed for NHK Japanese Public Television.

A thirty minute documentary about the Guggenheim Museum and the arts in Soho. Produced and directed for NHK Japanese Public Television.

A thirty minute documentary about community access and Deep Dish TV. Produced and directed for NHK Japanese Public Television.

Over one hundred short documentaries about train travel in the United States and Canada. Produced and directed for TV Asahi, Japan.

A production design, art direction, and props construction company for film, television and theater. TEACHING

Assistant Professor - English Language and Literature.  1982-1985

Kyoto Sangyo University, Kyoto, Japan. Developed innovative curricula for large (70+ student) ESL classes, designed to overcome difficulties with oral comprehension and performance, particular to Japanese students. Also taught classes in American literature and culture.

Kyoto Gaikoku Daigaku, Kyoto, Japan. Taught classes in ESL, reading and composition.

Co-founder, President

SpeakEasy English Language Lab, Kyoto, Japan.  1982-1985

An experimental school for English language instruction, whose purpose was to develop and test an original and interactive curriculum based on games and theater. Publications include “Hearing Aid,” an interactive book and cassette tape program.
