"It All Started In Wright Hall"
- a conversation with Ruth Ozeki (’80) and Carole DeSanti (’81)
In 1979, novelist Ruth Ozeki and editor Carole DeSanti first exchanged ideas about literature, feminism, and the meaning of life in Ann Jones’ Comparative Literature class in Wright Hall.
Since then, Carole has gone on to distinguish herself in the field of publishing, and Ruth has become an award-winning filmmaker and novelist. Carole, now Vice President and Editor at Large at the Penguin Group USA, edited and published Ruth’s two novels, “My Year of Meats” and “All Over Creation.” They have collaborated as friends, as writer and editor, and as colleagues, and now, almost three decades later, their conversation continues, at Smith, where it all
began.
Ruth and Carole will lead an informal dialogue and Q & A about writing, women’s fiction, identity politics, commercial publishing and the value of a Smith education. Join them for a rare insider's look at the writing profession and the story of how two Smith friends lived by their wits and found a life in literature.
